It is with great sadness to announce the death of my dearly beloved dog Sasha.![]()
She was a pioneer in the realms of water search having successfully qualified as the second Water Search Dog available to Mountain Rescue and Lowland Search Teams throughout the UK [WSD Quinny being the first with handler Mike Dermody]. She was employed extensively in water search operations by my team [Bolton MRT], and on a nationwide basis by third parties on the Rivers Tweed; Severn: Thames and Dee as well as other types of water courses and reservoirs.![]()
Her first recorded confirmed search was for a missing kayaker on the River Wey in Guildford 16th March 2016, ably backed up by Water Search Dog Quinny, with Mike as his handler.![]()
Other successful searches followed with recovery by others, bringing closure for the relatives of the missing people.![]()
Nearing the end of her career, she was involved in the search of a missing Greater Manchester Fire Officer, on the River Irwell in Manchester and a missing hill walker near The Bridge of Orchy.![]()
She and Quinny were used as role models in the setting of the standards of UK Water Search Dogs, which has been developed and is used by others on an international basis.![]()
Recently, handler Dave and Sasha were recognised by our national organisation, NSARDA, with a lifetime achievement award “in recognition and appreciation of the outstanding contribution you have made to NSARDA, the search teams you have worked with, the police service, and the communities they serve”. It was a fitting tribute to a wonderful dog.
